Tuesday 19 June 2012: Stag beetle at last

Managed a longer walk at lunchtime and bothered a few butterflies, chasing speckled woods along the pathways. I stopped by a small pond and watched the tadpoles and a few damselflies. I saw my first dragonfly too - a large green one patrolling a grassy field. Couldn't follow it quickly enough to get a photo.

I spotted this rather battered female stag beetle in the garden when I got home. I've been hoping to spot one since the beginning of June but the rain and cold seem to have delayed their emergence. This one was moving quite fast across the grass and was quite tricky to blip. I'm not sure what has happened to the elytra on this one - she looks a bit battered.
