Monday 25 June 2012: The long way around

Was in Dubai for an early meeting and site visit. I had then to go to the Motorworld site. Rather than take the highway to Abu Dhabi then towards Al Ain, and back towards Oman, I decided to go via the desert route.

It started off well, I cut off the Al Ain road towards Bab Al Shams desert hotel. This has a great section of deserted dead straight (18km) road with no speed cameras :-). My thought was to then cut off onto the truck road. Unfortunately there was no link between the roads, so I put the car into offroad mode and crossed over the desert between them.

The truck road is a scary thing (all the trucks between Dubai and Abu Dhabi/Saudi) travel along this rather than the highway). It is a single carriageway with two convoys travelling in opposite directions. In a car you put on your headlights, get nerves of steel and drive between the convoys hoping the trucks move in to let you past.
