La mammarazza

Heirloom

I have virtually no keepsakes from my grandmother Blanche. Except for my Art Nouveau Lunéville-style glass fruit bowl here. It was never meant to be a fruit bowl. It was a ceiling lampshade, and would have been held up by chains clipped to a metal trim round its diametre. By the time I found it, it had lost all that. Typical of my grandmother, who wasn't at all interested in housewifely things, being a village schoolteacher. She taught me to read and write, which is what has earned me my living, though she never knew it.

Heirloom idea courtesy of Emmala and her grandma Nelly's tablecloth!
