Tuesday 3 July 2012: 'Heroes Helmet'
This was my Dad's helmet that he wore back in 1970.
He and two of his buddies were the first men to cross the Australian Mainland from the Southern most point to the Northern most point by motorcycle. They filmed the entire journey producing a 1 hour TV documentary called Six Wheels North.
Dad was a complete novice on a motorcyle before setting out on this journey as a 25 year old, and at one point on the ride in outback NSW he had a major crash caused by shocking road conditions and ended being thrown 60 feet off the bike. This helmet might well have saved his life.
By the end of the journey all 3 riders were handling the rough tracks with ease, after spending almost 4 weeks on the bikes making their little piece of history.
Dad passed away early last year from cancer, I still miss him and think about him every day.
He was my hero.
