E is for Envy

Bear with me ....

This is a small section of a marble plaque of the Seven Deadly sins which was found in a monastary near Nice before being sold by a dealer in Monte Carlo to Frank Pratt Barlow, squire of Lynchmere (near Haslemere in Surrey) whilst he was on holiday. Mr Barlow donated it to St Peters Church, (originally built in 1080) where it was installed inside the Church in 1905 when a new extension was being built.

The plaque was believed to have been sculpted in South Italy, possibly Naples, in the fourteenth century. There are 7 marble faces, each of which represent one of the seven deadly sins. This one is Envy ....
