Flood defences

The Orchard at Worcester College, Oxford has lots of lovely fruit trees.

They produce enough fruit for the college to be able to make a lot of pure fruit juices (mostly apple) to sell in the autumn.

The other notable feature is how dry the ground is, despite all the wet weather we're having.

An oak tree can soak up 60 gallons of water a day...

So maybe instead of fancy flood defences that are both costly and seemingly ineffective, we should just plant a load of trees to soak up the water...
