Pukeko

A pukeko is a native swamp hen and a member of the rail family. Although very common in New Zealand, they are partially protected - I was interested to read they can be legally harvested in the duck shooting season.  They have huge feet, ideal for swampy locations and although they can fly clumsily. they prefer to run.

They are not popular with farmers who consider the pukeko damages pasture and crops. I am rather fond of them and their clown like activities
