Tawny Frogmouth

Tawny Frogmouths are medium sized nocturnal birds that only hunt at night. During the day, they perch on tree branches, often low down, camouflaged as part of the tree. We know where this family of 3 lives in the Belair Park and often pay them a quiet visit.

It is unusual to catch them with eyes open during the day but I was lucky this time.

With their nocturnal habit and owl-like appearance, Tawny Frogmouths are often confused with owls, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Their feet are weak by comparison and lack the curved talons of owls.
