Friday 13 July 2012: Future Ladybugs

The top of the Asian lily has been black and sticky with aphids for weeks; I tried spraying them off with no success at all. Yesterday I noticed these little dragons crawling all over the same area--turns out they are ladybug larvae feeding on the aphids. These creatures grow rather quickly and keep shedding their skins until they curl into pupas and begin changing into ladybugs. Right now they are very busy running around on the plant, leaving little spent aphid skeletons behind, not to mention their own discarded armor. It's fascinating to watch, and difficult to photograph.
