A Heron on the Saltmarsh

It's unusual to see herons in the middle of the saltmarsh as they are usually tucked away at the side of rivers or ponds. I can't imagine that he/she would have found anything to eat in this strip of still saltwater in the middle of the saltmarsh. Maybe he/she had his/her fill for breakfast and just wanted to chill out. He/she was also remarkably calm about my presence (plus two dogs) and ony flew off a few yards as we approached. By the way how do you sex herons as it might help me from resorting to unisex language !
