Post Derelict

This is the old post office sorting office at the back of Bristol's Temple Meads station.

It is fair to say that with the notable exception of places such as Bath most major urban centres are not best approached by rail.  Generally the view from the train is of a "city's ripped backside", to quote Iggy Pop from "the Passenger".  If you have ever visited Bristol by train this particular eyesore will almost certainly have been one of your first impressions of this otherwise fair city.

For nearly 20 years now Bristolians have been waiting to see what would happen with this local eyesore.  It had got to the stage where most of us were so familiar with the building that we didn't even see it anymore.  The City Council bought the site recently and, along with the nearby island site that will hopefully house Bristol's Arena, this area should be regenerated in the course of the next few years.

I've been meaning to blip this view for ages now, and in all honesty the glorious sky was the real excuse for today's shot, which perhaps does not emphasise the dereliction.  I should really have waited for darker dismal skies, or posted a zoomed version to emphasise the sorry state of the building.  But it is a lovely sky ...

I am woefully behind on comments again, and will not get the chance to catch up this evening.  Tomorrow is however another day ...
