Tuesday 24 July 2012: Lovely Weather For DUKWs...

D - designed in 1942
U - utility vehicle
K - powered front axle
W - two powered rear axles

So now you know!

Basically a standard GMC 2-ton truck with a hull and a propeller grafted on. 21,000 were built between '42 and '45, with no need to last longer than the war. Surplus ones ended up with fire and rescue units; the Australians used them in Antarctic exploration; Californian fishermen used them to collect abalone from the boats and swim/drive straight to the fish markets (a bloody genius idea!) and any city with a river now has a couple of these to drown tourists!

Not that we need that - we have weather to do that instead!

And a big welcome to jkj10 who's tagged along with the rest of us!

-----------
BTW:
When I changed the title from one Douglas Adams quote to another, I didn't think the implied weather would come with it...

As for the original title, there was a thought where 42 would be the number of entries I'd get to before I got bored/depressed/ forcibly removed from the site. This has obviously failed to happen! We apologise for the inconvenience...
