Thursday 26 July 2012: O, She Doth Teach The Torches To Burn Bright
"Fortune brings in some boats that are not steered.", is a pretty good phrase to sum up the reason why Maddy and I were at Shakespeare's Globe today to see twelve year old Ify Egesi take centre stage with the Olympic Torch. This was just one part of the final leg of the relay before the Games opening ceremony when it seemed as if the whole of London was ablaze with excitement.
It was wonderful to share in the celebrations of Southwark and Bexhill on Sea. Both occasions were tremendous, but as time's winged chariot passes, the things that are in my memory lock'd will be the proud smiles of the runners. These ordinary people have far outshone any brief candle.
Which is why the quote from Romeo and Juliet is so apt.
