Winter Hill

The last Saturday in July is traditionally reserved for a "pack run" of 18 miles over the 12 summits of Winter Hill - the route and run are known as "Coope's Dozen" in recognition of the instigator, John Coope. As has been the case for a year or two there were two "packs", one a little more social than the other, but the same rules apply - no racing until the 12th summit.

As there were 4 blippers between the two groups this might not be the only blip from Winter Hill today.

As an outlier of the Pennines it affords unrivalled views and has a particularly rich history beginning in the Bronze Age until today when it provides an ideal site for telecoms masts. In between, it has been the setting for mining activity, aeroplane disasters and murders. If this has whetted your appetite you can learn more here.
