But is it art?

Today was the official opening of an art gallery in a nearby disused cave cooperative. I've been itching to see inside as it's a truly massive and brutalist complex of buildings, including a gargantuan set of concrete tanks (built in 1967) that can be seen for miles around. I was sure it would make a fabulous space for displaying art, and I was right. This is just the part formerly used for storing wine, the only part that's been restored so far; a mere 1000 square metres. A beautiful space, beautifully restored, and amazingly ambitious for one man.

The artist responsible, Philippe Aini, had invited about 20 artists to display their work. He obviously has a great network; I have never seen so many people at an opening around here, and they had come from far and wide. Sadly after an hour of study I didn't see a single artwork I wanted to take home; almost all of it was rather brutal modern art. Aini himself sculpts, paints, and designs dresses -- not ones you'd want to wear in public though. A group of women appeared at one point wearing weird hats, various styles of basque, and dresses with cutaways; see extra for one of them.
