Sunday 5 August 2012: Cobbles in the rain
Once again resisting a blip of the TV screen after another gold medal for Team GB today in the tennis. Couldn't believe how well Andy Murray did after saving a couple of break points in his first service game. Just about to watch the 100m final - the ultimate alpha-male moment in sport. Can Bolt do it again? Watched a fascinating documentary a few weeks back about the success of black sprinters descended from slaves. I suppose I'll wait to see who wins...
And he did!
It's a little un-effecting for me. The hype about the 100m final. The blue riband event in athletics. Fastest man in the world, yes, but is there enough narrative? Certainly there isn't enough time in the event itself to have much of the to-and-fro of competition. The story is all about the characters I suppose. But is it a reflection on short attention spans in the modern world that it is now the 100m that is the prime event when previously it was the 1500m/mile?
