Cannon House in Sedbergh has a couple of these cast iron cannons embedded in the pavement in front of it. Originally they were strategically placed to protect the fragile corners from damage by the iron rims of the horsedrawn trailers of the carriers and stage coaches.
These could be of Spanish or more likely, French origin. They were probably booty from one of the sea battles. In an 'up you' gesture wealthy residents put them to 'better use' than the previous owners.
