Saturday 11 August 2012: Dunbar's Close Garden

We were too early for the Organ recital at Canongate Kirk this afternoon so nipped into one of the Hidden Gardens of the Royal Mile.

This view is only a part; on the other side of the roses there is a series of smaller gardens with with box hedging, herbs, clipped yews and fruit trees. Such gardens were quite usual in C17 Canongate where the overcrowding of the Old Town gave way to more spacious living.

This site was bought by the Mushroom Trust in the mid-1970's and developed into a garden of a similar style to those of C17, providing an oasis of peace away from the traffic of the Royal Mile, especially during the busyness at Festival time.
