Houses of Wilmington #29

Schonwald-Harper House

Dr. James Schonwald came from Hungary in 1840 to be a Port doctor. He was fluent in five languages and well suited for his work. The house was remodeled in 1903 by Riverboat Captain Harper who owned two ships that sailed down the Cape Fear River daily to Southport. He also helped develop Carolina Beach. It is Neo-Classical in style with Ionic columns and broad porches. It is one of the few historic houses that sits back on the property.

There are only a few more houses in the series that have been part of the tour, including one major building, the oldest wood structure in Wilmington. The road in front of the house is currently under repair. Additionally, there are one or two houses that are either in disrepair or currently covered too much by the summer canopy.
