Tuesday 14 August 2012: Dorcus parallelipipedus

Aka the lesser stag beetle. I'm going to politely move along without dwelling on the 'lesser' bit - this visitor to my yard is still pretty big as British beetles go, and it moves with a charming ponderous deliberation that suggests it is powered by clockwork.
