Thursday 16 August 2012: Giant Canopy
I love the festivals, and especially the Fringe, but I'm not sure that more is necessarily better. On George Street, there is definitely more with the Spiegeltent and an open air bar and stage under a giant canopy.
On the one hand it means more opportunity for performers and more choice for audiences. On the other, more competition for an audience that is at least partly constrained by the available accommodation in the city. More competition means more shows which fail to attract the audiences they need, losing money.
It's nice to see the center of gravity of the festival moving back toward the new town though, and it seems to be a success..
