Friday 17 August 2012: Marmee!

BACKBLIP

Larkyn loves her grandmother, whom she calls, "Marmee," like the mother in Little Women. After breakfast this morning, we took a tin pail with LOTS of rocks for Larkyn to throw into the creek. Once they were all gone, we walked to my favorite spot next to the creek (my happy place), where we threw a stick for Vincent into the creek, over and over again. Larkyn LOVED when he would SPLASH into the water to retrieve the stick, and laughed at him for a long time. Here she is, sitting on Marmee, while watching Vincent SPLASH over and over.

After packing everything into the car, including Vincent and Larkyn, the car wouldn't start, as the battery had died. We knew it was going to need replacing soon, and I guess having the doors open while I loaded the car ran it down. Bother. Thankfully, my dad and brother (and a neighbor) were able to jump the car so we could drive home.

When I first told Larkyn the car was broken, she got the saddest look on her face, like she was about to burst into tears. I calmed her by telling her that it would be okay and that Grandpa would fix it, but that look at first made me so sad to see.

She held her hands over her eyes for about half the drive home, as it was raining (Yay - we needed it). No matter how much I tried to explain to her that she didn't need to cover her eyes, she kept those little hands over her eyes. I think she fell asleep at one point, as her hands kept slipping, but she would put them right back.

Tonight at bedtime, I told her that her pacifiers were all gone and that I needed her to sleep like a big girl, without one. At first, she cried, but after I explained to her that she was a big girl and could do this, she agreed, "Yes, Mama." I know, she's a bit old to still be sleeping with a pacifier, and I've been meaning to end it, but with my thyroid issues, I just didn't have the heart to take them away. Tonight we did, she slept great and I think this will be the end of that. So much easier than I had anticipated. Silly me!
