Kathryn Stevens

Between 5000 and 6000 people are unhoused and very cold in Portland on this foggy, damp winter solstice. One of the things I love about some Portland activists is that they don’t just talk about change; they make it happen. They don’t just wield megaphones and lead crowds; they redistribute wealth. Local activist Kathryn Stevens, here seated with her partner Greg McKelvey, joined Portland’s Houseless Support Coalition in organizing an emergency winter clothing drive tonight. Using social media to recruit donors, they collected a few truckloads of boxes and bags full of warm clothing they will now distribute to those living in the streets. You may have seen them in my journal before. Both were arrested and brutally strong-armed by the police recently, but they were released without being charged with any violations of the law, and they continue their work together.

Update on yesterday’s blip: I have now posted the video on Youtube.
