"Roman Bridge"

When the Romans constructed a little fort just inland from the mouth of the River Esk at Musselburgh, they also built a bridge here. Using the original Roman foundations it was rebuilt in the 13th century and then a third arch was added when it was again rebuilt in 1597. For centuries this was on the main route from Edinburgh to London and invading armies also crossed there. Today only pedestrians can use it.
