Junk Art. : : Go Green

Sebastopol is a quirky place, a bit of a '70's hippie haven. There is a high quotient of older women with long, flowing grey hair, stores with pot growing supplies, old apple orchards, repurposed apple packing sheds, junk art maker Patrick Amiot and a wonderful farmers' market every Sunday. About ten years ago when we decided to get serious about moving out of Berkeley, we rented a little 850 sq.ft. farmhouse on the outskirts of town where we spent most weekends.

You can't spend much time in Sebastopol without getting to know about Patrick Amiot, and his wife Brigitte Laurent, transplanted Canadians who now live on Florence Avenue in Sebastopol. Almost everybody on Florence Avenue has one of Amiot's large whimsical sculptures, made from all manner of found objects and painted by his wife, and his own front yard is brimming with them (see extra, if I manage to post it...Blipfoto seems to be having some problems this afternoon). Before we ever knew about Florence Avenue, however, we had begun to notice appropriately themed sculptures in front of businesses all over town. This one is in front of an acupuncture studio, here is probably his biggest one, and this one perhaps his most complicated one. They are all delightfully silly.

When we moved to Santa Rosa we gave up the Sebastopol house. Although we had only been renting it for about four years, it was almost harder to give it up than our Berkeley home of 45 years. We go back to Sebastopol frequently as it is only about 12 miles away. This morning we noticed a brand new offering in front of the Community First Credit Union, and it seemed a perfect entry for Silly Saturday.

Thanks to admirer for hosting.
