Sewing box

I inherited this beautiful sewing box from my aunt. It was made for her mother by a German prisoner of war at the internment camp for "enemy aliens" on the Isle of Man, during the First World War. My aunt's father, my German grandfather was a businessman, working in England when war broke out. He was rounded up with other "aliens" and spent the duration of the war as a prisoner. As it happened, my Scottish grandfather spent the war as a POW in Germany, which is probably why the both survived the war.
