Desert Squirrel

Waratah (Telopea speciosissima)

We have a waratah that has four flowers; not many leaves, but it excels itself in flowering.  This makes me wonder whether it might be thinking that reproduction is its only chance of survival, in a less than optimal site.  However, although the leaves never look that healthy (sort of dry an leathery looking, perhaps this is what they are supposed to look like), our waratah produced one magnificent flower last year, and four somewhat smaller ones this year.  As it is right by our front door, all our visitors comment on it, and several have taken its photograph.  I can't seem to make it look anything but messy, so hence the close up detail shot shown here.
