Night out

Work continues to be. Something new to deal with every day. The positive aspect is that there was no way I can feel bored! Felt more in control of things today, and that was good.

S had arranged for us to meet up with a friend at a corner bar in West Lynn; Frieda's. Some years ago this building housed our preferred butchery. The young man who owned and ran the shop was the son of the previous owner, who was connected back to the original butchery established in this building in 1905. Although young, he was a traditional butcher, and he was successfully presenting and selling meat from animals which had been free range farmed.

That is not difficult to do in New Zealand for beef and lamb, as open pasture farming is standard. Unfortunately, New Zealand has adopted foreign techniques of farming pigs and chickens. To successfully convince the customers that the meat is free range, that has to include labelling lamb and beef likewise, and that can result in increased expense of those meats.

Coincidentally, a Hamilton based food market expanded into Auckland with a store near West Lynn, with NZ grown fruit and vegetables at highly competitive prices, and all free range meat, which undercut the small local butchery in West Lynn because of economies of scale. He sold up, and yet another cafe/bar was established; Frieda's.

Part way through the evening I went to the lavatory, on the wall of which was this photograph of the original Norgrove Butchery. I'm pleased that I have been able to record the buildings origins, although a little sad that the photo I used to see in pride of place in the shop, is now tucked away in the loo.
