Beneath Biscay

Dindurra

The Gran Café Dindurra is probably the most emblematic of Gijon's cafés. It was opened in 1899 (or 1901?) next to the then Dindurra Theatre which itself opened in 1899, taking its name from the businessman who funded it.

Set in the far wall is the door that connects the café with the foyer of the theatre.

The 'Dindurra' theatre was reduced to ruins during a bombardment of the city in October 1937, only two weeks before the eventual fall of Gijon. It was rebuilt and opened in 1942 under its current name, the 'Jovellanos' theatre.

I think the cafe escaped relatively unscathed and that most of its features are original.

Back here in the twenty-first century, they serve a very tasty and reasonably priced toasted hamburger sandwich and chips at lunchtime.
