There Must Be Magic

Every Hill of Flame

"There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;
We must rise and follow her,
When from every hill of flame
She calls and calls each vagabond by name."

October just may be our favorite month of the year. When the foliage starts to turn, it's like one big, awesome, ongoing party, everywhere! I start to feel restless. I must go: go and see!

We took Friday as a vacation day and headed for the woods. We spent much of the day at our Quehanna back-country camp site. (Read more about the Quehanna camp site in my April 6 and April 7 blip entries. And there's more in my June 2 and June 3 blips.)

We didn't take our backpacks, though, as rain was forecast to arrive sometime Friday night. So it was just a day hike, not an overnight backpack. So much easier without so much weight on our backs! (Still, three or four miles in, then three or four miles out, ended up being a fair amount of walking in one day.)

On the drive home, we cut through Kylertown and then did a quick tour of the colors at Black Moshannon State Park. The foliage colors on the ridge above Moshannon - riotous yellows and oranges and greens - were the best I've seen anywhere.

Oh yes, there is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir! Don't miss it, friends. When October calls, listen to the gypsy in your heart: rise and follow her! Oh yes, arise, arise, arise! Enchantment waits outside!
