Michaelmas Fair

Abingdon Michaelmas Fair is one of the local events of the year! Originally run by the Abbot of Abingdon Abbey it dates back to the 13th century, possibly earlier. It is the longest and narrowest street fair in the UK (and possibly Europe). The street are closed every year for three days: the fair always being held on a Monday and a Tuesday.

I visited with my 9 month old grandson this afternoon - and watched him enjoy a ride on the Tea Cups with his dad! It was slightly drizzly and damp but good fun to walk the entire length (a little over a kilometre) and back before it gets too crowded after-dark.

I like the contrast between the staid and beautiful County Hall, which has towered over fairs since the 1680s, and the razzmatazz of the Waltzer! More contrasting fair
pics here including the incongruous combination of a 15th century church tower and a semi-naked woman.
