Late Bloomer

One last Welsh poppy
and a bud
hang on at any cost.
They've coped with wind
and rain and hail,
surviving modest frost.

One last Welsh poppy
flies the flag;
remembers dragons, leeks
and daffodils -
of such as these
each yellow petal speaks.

While mountains and Welsh
sheep now bear
December's weighty snow,
our last Welsh poppy
and a bud
still wear their summer's glow.

Thanks to Biker Bear for hosting the Flower Friday challenge, this week celebrating its third anniversary. We've had blue sky and sunshine today, which made the cold wind bearable.
