Trip to the Apple shop this afternoon to get a free - yes free battery replacement for the iPhone. This is because there was a batch which was known to have faults causing the phone to shut down when it apparently still had a fair bit of battery power left. So I passed all the tests and a new battery has been installed and the phone is ready for collection tomorrow morning. Result....
