to Come to the Rescue

This little essay oil painting is by the artist James Charles (1851-1906)

I purchased it a few months ago and it has since been cleaned up and re-framed. When it arrived it looked as if chocolate had been poured over it because it was so neglected.

So it now has a new lease of life and will be hung with a number of similar small pictures by the same artist.  It is still quite a dark shade and I suspect that it depicts the heathland in West Sussex.

However the fun for me really starts now because written on the back of the picture in pencil is the name and address of a gentleman living in London and who might have been the first owner of the picture in 1907.

So this is where the detective work begins....
