Eastern Spinebill

The closest thing we have to a humming bird.  These little birds can hover, and take nectar from tubular flowers on the wing.  But they can't fly backwards or hover for very long.

Luckily our salvias have been in flower for weeks and weeks, so this long dry hot spell we are enduring must suit them.

The spinebills wouldn't normally come this low, or this close unless it's the only food source available to them.
