Something is eating my plants

We planted a row of 20 odd laurels in October, hoping that they would be established by now.  First they were beaten by the rain and winds of a bad winter and now something is gnawing them to death.  We also have mole hills in the garden, so maybe they are tired of eating worms and have gone vegetarian.
