The Whys Man

George Wyllie & Schools? Quite a combination!

In yesterday's blip, pupils from six schools represented - and how well they did that - all the other schools taking part in the press conference for the opening of the exhibition.

Last night, one pupil represented all the others by assisting First Minister, Alex Salmond to officially open both the exhibition and the schools' 'Boat Shed'.

Today, 200 pupils from eight Glasgow schools came to the Glasgow City Schools Reception, still a representative group but as many as the venue could possibly hold.

Scotland's Makar, Liz Lochhead read them her poem, "A Wee Multitude of Questions for George Wyllie".

Pupils from John Paul Academy performed their own arrangement of George Wyllie's 'Paper Boat Song'. Great ukelele players, like the artist himself.

Writer, Donny O'Rourke shared his memories of George Wyllie and gave the pupils, from P5-S6, a crystal clear picture of the man, warts and all, work and all.

Pupils from St Andrew's Secondary performed their own dramatised version of the 'Whys Man?', the 'Wise Man'.

Then, pupils from John Paul Academy, St Andrew's Secondary, Bellahouston Academy, St Margaret Mary's Secondary, Hillhead High School, Elmvale Primary, Kelvindale Primary and St Monica's (Milton) Primary explored the exhibition, Wyllie's song-writing and asked all the questions in a Q&A with George Wyllie's daughter, Louise.

So much work from so many pupils and their teachers. Artists everyone of them, as Donny O'Rourke told them.

It was a privilege to work with the pupils, the teachers, with Donny and Liz, and what a setting, surrounded by the Wyllie scul?tures!

Thanks for a brilliant two days!
