Last Reminders

One of the few reminders of the former S&N complex in Fountainbridge. I think these gates used to lead to the kegging line, fed by pipes from the actually brewery across the road. It might also have been where Returned Beer was processed and come of the other departments whose IT systems I worked on when I was with the company. Now it is all long gone and the land has either already been redeveloped or is awaiting new buildings.
I picked the wrong day for a day of cinema, as you can see by that glorious blue sky. I started with our regular Socrates Cafe in the Filmhouse bar, discussing two questions - ' "Shop for values not bargains." Middle Class indulgence?' and ' "Almost everyone intelligent becomes interesting once you talk to them." Discuss'. Then it was a quick walk to the Odeon for a Paraguayan film called The Heiresses. An interesting film with a strong female cast, centred around an ageing lesbian couple. Apparently the lead actor had doubts about the role (in her first film) and only decided to do it if she could change her name on screen. They expected the film would not be seen by many people but instead it has won awards at festival after festival around the world so it is probably safe to say she hasn't really remained as anonymous as she had hoped. Next was a set of shorts along at Cineworld on Fountainbridge. Bumped into my acting friend B there and we had a bit of a chat. Another acting friend was in one of the films, a story set in a Scottish chip shop. Unfortunately for the other films in the screening one of the films was based around the last letter written by a nineteen-year-old woman who died fighting ISIS in Kobane and therefore everything else seemed a little trivial in comparison. Next it was back to the Filmhouse for Time Trial, about the Scottish cyclist David Millar and his last season as a pro cyclist in 2014. A raw film about an athlete reaching his physical limit in his sport. And then it was back along to Cineworld for my last film of the day - the world premiere of Steel Country. One of the leading actors was someone I had photographed way back in 2011 when she was involved in The Network at the TV Festival, acting in a Hollyoaks mini-episode created by the participants. A good film to finish off the day.
