Action

There was a lot of excitement in the hood this morning. When we got back from our beach walk, the streets in the next block were barricaded by police cars, lights flashing. After we pulled in the driveway we joined a flock of neighbors as they stood around quietly chatting. There were sheriffs, campus police, city, and a K-9 unit--a dozen cars at least. Lots of intense milling around. At one point an officer walked by with a rifle and Im wondering, “Why are we all standing here like a line of ducks?”

Some guy had stolen a car, rammed it into a van parked on the street, bolted from the car and ran ran ran away. They had a large section cordoned off, but apparently he slipped through, with occasional sightings of someone running through backyards being reported on the police scanner. The tv folks pulled up. The police cars began to peel away. We talk with neighbors we haven’t seen in awhile, people trading reports. Someone says, “We can read about it in the paper tomorrow.” “Yeah, maybe by Monday,“ someone else jokes, referring to the downsizing of our local paper.

All’s quiet now, though.
