The lair of a baxter

Old Scottish gravestones from the 18th Century are often decorated with symbols of the trade of the deceased.

This gravestone marks the grave of Elspeth Robertson, a baxter's (baker) wife. Her husband, the baker, is also buried here together with their children

Newly baked loaves of bread on crossed peels, the long-handled wooden shovels used for putting bread into the ovens, and a long-handled brush, used for cleaning the bread-ovens, represent the trade of a baker.
