The Tyron Palace......

Yesterday I visited New Bern, North Carolina.  The first place I wanted to see was the Tryon Palace.  As it turned out, it was the only place.  This palace was built before the Revolutionary War, when King George was the ruler of England.  He sent an appointee to New Bern to Govern his colonies and oversee the tar, lumber operations, and subjects of his colony.  That governor lived in this palace, the only one ever built in the US.
The place was the seat of power.  After the Revolutionary War the palace became the capital of North Carolina for a short time when the seat of government was moved to Raleigh.
Extra 1 is a painting of King George that was there to remind people who came to eat at the palace that they were all his loyal subjects.  The painting hung over the fireplace; the governor sat under the painting, reminding him that he served at the pleasure of the king.  I also learned that the colonists did not burn wood in the fireplaces.  Coal was put on ships and transported to the colonies for heating cooking and light.
Extra 2  is the meat smoke house....  when an animal was slaughtered, it would be smoked and preserved so there was always food to eat.

Extra 3 is the dress of the servants at that time.  All of the clothes are hand made by a seamstress who works at the palace.
