Millstones down at Ardnish on the Rhinns. This 18th century mill was supplied with corn (barley) by sea, with the tiny boats tying up to the rocks below the village. There were no roads back then. Much, if not most, of the work of the mill probably went into the illegal distillation of whisky - much to the irritation of the local landlords and clergy. Mills like this existed in most of Islay's villages, and because we know how many folk were being prosecuted for illegal distillation we can surmise that there was a significant demand for grist to supply them. Which meant a lot of milling....
