The ancient yew at Beltingham

The Walking Festival began today. It was sunny, rather windy, but a glorious day to be out walking.

I was leading the Tree Walk. In my image you can just see Bill Burlton, our expert, talking to some of the group sheltering under the ancient yew tree in Beltingham churchyard. The yew is thought to be at least 900 years old.

Some say that Cuthbert may have preached here, long before the church that bears his name was built.

We had a cracking walk. Bill is a new expert for us and he did exactly what any walk leader wants an expert to do. He was interesting, enthusiastic, spoke in clear English and answered questions.

It was a lovely start to the festival.
