Ravenscraig Castle

We keep saying that we've never been to visit Kirkcaldy, decided to go there but really only took in the C15 Ravenscraig Castle, considered the first to be constructed to withstand cannon fire.

It was commissioned by King James II for his wife, Mary of Guelders, but he died before it was begun; under Mary's control the East tower and basement were completed and she lived there until her death only three years later, in 1463. Her son, James III, inherited the castle but in 1471 gave it to William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney and Caithness, who completed the building.

With little to explore we drove down to the beach and observed the castle and nearby beehive doocot from sea level, then drove up the Dysart for a wander there before returning home.

One day we will visit Kirkcaldy... .
