Saint Lucia's Day

Today is the due date to send Christmas cards with 0,60 e stamp and we have a long tradition to get our card's ready at the last day. It was again a family effort and I'm very pleased that we made it on time. In fact, I was at post office with our 50 cards already at 16:55 so this might be our record!

In the evening we had the pleasure to see a play of Emma's drama club (Serlokki Holmes and Watsanen save Christmas). Emma's role was to be a burglar named Timo Tiirikka and the play was highly entertaining.

Saint Lucia's Day is celebrated every year on the 13th of December as a festival of light. It was commonly believed as late as the end of the 19th century that this was the longest night of the year, coinciding with Winter Solstice. The same can be seen in the poem "A Nocturnal upon S. Lucy's Day, Being the Shortest Day" by the English poet John Donne. St. Lucy is believed to have been a Sicilian saint who suffered a sad death in Syracuse, Sicily around AD 310. She was one of the earliest Christian martyr saints.
