Haematopus longirostris

The Pied Oystercatcher. It's one of two species of oystercatcher in NZ; this one is found in Australia as well. The endemic Variable Oystercatcher has a pied phase that is quite similar to this one, but only the Pied has a white leading edge on its wing. Taken near the Fur Seal colony on the Kaikoura peninsula.
