The eyes, the eyes!

Finally made it out to the Isle of May, after the trip was cancelled on my birthday because of the weather.
It was a great day, of course. The sea was still rolling after yesterday's storms, but it was dry and the birds were just fantastic.
Extras include general puffin loveliness, an arctic tern shouting at Meles and an oystercatcher as a size comparison. I have found, when talking to people on Inchcolm, that a lot of folk think that puffins are substantial birds, like a medium-sized penguin or something. In fact, they are smaller than a street pigeon. It makes it even more astonishing to think that the pufflings which fledge this year (one per nest) will jump into the sea and not touch land again until they are about 4 years old. They will live to be 25-30 years old, though; there's one ringed individual who is 43 :)
