An Suileachan, Reef

We spent the day doing a walk and cycle around Great Bernera before driving round to Bhaltos where I took the blip. This is one of the many memorials to local Lewis people who stood against the landlord, the Matheson family, that evicted them from their lands to allow bigger farms with more woolly maggots to increase profits. The original evictions started in 1850, with people scattered to other bits of Lewis or forced to America and ended with ‘victory’ in the courts in 1891 whereby the lands would be given back. Scandalously it took more than 30 years before this happened. This memorial was commissioned by the Bhaltos Community Trust and is really very good. The collage has an old and new house on Great Bernera, a sculpture at Bostadh and a panorama looking west from Great Bernera.

Yesterday’s blip.
