Whanau

Whanau is often translated as 'family'; however, its meaning is more complex, multi-layered, flexible and dynamic. It needs to be seen through the world view of Maori. It is not only much more than extended family in the Pakeha sense, often including close friends, usually resident in the same locality. It can also be used to indicate a political grouping, which is smaller than Iwi (tribe) and larger than Hapu (family).

Today's gathering is most clearly identified by the word Whanau. The main photo shows second cousins Mr H and Ms M. The gathering was to celebrate the first birthday of his half brother Little H in the Korean tradition of the mother. Guests included grandparents, and more extended family connections as well as friends. We don't reside in a single locality. This is not a political grouping, But it goes beyond close and more distant relatives. Whanau we were.

As we were leaving the gathering, I saw a Tui in a Kowhai tree. And was able to get the photo I have included as an extra.
