98 High Street

This building in Maidstone High Street has had scaffolding around it for several months. Only today did we learn the reason when these information panels had been installed.

The building in question is the double roofed structure in the middle of the black and white photo. Beneath the modern facade which was latterly a Chemist shop are the remains of an oak framed building dating back to at least 1360.

It was probably a Hall House occupying a prominent place at the top of Maidstone's Medieval marketplace and would have been owned by a wealthy merchant. It is now undergoing significant restoration.

A blip for the future when it is finally completed. Amazing what you find out and what exists under the superficial skin of modernity.
